Stingy Kops?

Media control the people’s perception. It is an incredible tool, even deadlier than bombs and bullets.

We, humans, have our own view, and when the media manage to spread their own version of story contrasting to what we believe is true, it is infuriating.

Today, The Star, one of the most popular English newspaper in Malaysia put “Stingy Kops” at their backpage. It is unbelievable, outrageous, I don’t know what other words would fittingly describe that act.

Out of multiple media capturing this story, only one got it accurately, kudos to SkySports. All the news quoted the same words from Luton’s manager, Kevin Blackwell, but only SkySports managed to show the ambiguity of Liverpool’s reaction to the appeal. Luton made a plea, but no words came from Liverpool officials that clearly (or even figuratively) state that they turned down that appeal.

Blackwell said, “They have probably said ‘we have to pay players £100,000 a week. You must be joking, otherwise we will be like you'”. The word probably was clearly there. ESPN’s soccernet.com did mention that neither club have given details of the financial agreements, and yet the headlines said that Liverpool won’t donate the receipts. Wtf?

They even wrote there, “Newspaper reports claim that…”. Well, what newspaper is that? The Sun? Daily Times? These newspapers are very good in spreading rumours (rumours is not yet news as it has uncertainty in it, but nevertheless it sells the papers) and New Straits Times frequently publish their articles, which makes NST more interesting than The Star on their BPL articles, but today bizarrely The Star took The Sun’s article (for the first time I think) and put it at the backpage! By the way, The Sun was the newspaper that committed the crime on Liverpool fans by publishing ‘the truth‘ on the Hillsborough disaster.

I don’t know will Liverpool donate their gate receipts (I hope they will) but with such false media statements, maybe they just won’t donate. For the first time, I wrote something on Liverpool before the kick off. I hope Liverpool will win (of course) whether convincingly or scrappily, I don’t really care. But I don’t think it will be necessary for me to write a separate post on the outcome.

Man, I used to hate The Star’s EPL pullout. Now I hate the whole bunch of it.

  1. “why should we donate our gate receipts? why don’t we make a better offer to you? we’ll play out a draw, and let you guys play at anfield for the replay in front of 40000 fans and let you take back home half of that gate receipts, which should be more than winning against us, and will help you finance maybe one more month”
